Abstract

Running production systems on the Internet tends to be full of surprises. After all, "the Internet is a collection of corner cases". One of the hardest tasks in keeping systems running is debugging such corner cases.

In this talk, we will go over a couple of weird corner case bugs, and the process taken for debugging them. Each case will also be accompanied by a brief 'lessons learned', that touch on often held believes that may stand in one's way when trying to understand why a system does not do what it was told (or rather: Why one has not yet understood what one told said system).

Hopefully, this talk let's you get a better handle on how to ask a system what it was told. And if not, it shares at least some fun stories.

(No DNS packets were involved in any of the cases discussed.)
